Church History

Records at the Warren County Register of Deeds show that the first church in the area was Coley Springs. We were told by our fore parents that Coley Springs and Jerusalem worshipped together at that time. Brothers Benjamin Williams, Elias Williams, Louis Parker, Henry Green, and William Davis served as trustees, and land was purchased on August 15, 1868.

Several years later, Jerusalem split off and began to worship in a little building just across the road. Records of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Association show that Jerusalem was organized in 1877 by Rev. Oscar Alston, who also served as the first pastor. Rev. Guilford Stamper also served in the early days of the church. The first deacons were Arthur Williams and Burwell Brodie.

The Early Church

On June 4, 1907, a three-quarter acre of land was purchased just up the road for $6.00 from Mason W. Williams for a better building. Isaac Davis, Nick Williams, and Edward Davis served as trustees. Pastors who served this church were: Reverends Burgess Harper, Preston Dickens, Peter Fogg, Saul Clanton, and Henry Alston. The deacons who served while the church was on this site were Bros. Isaac Davis, Edward Davis, Ned Alston, Ben Davis, Plummer Williams, Willie Williams, Fate Welch, and Peter Williams. After several years of worship, the church was destroyed by fire while Rev. Dickens was serving as pastor.

In 1916, a three-quarter acre of land was purchased from Nick Williams and a little white frame building was built by Jerusalem for members to continue to worship. This is the building next door that has stood for over 98 years. Jerusalem lost some members after the fire, and in 1921, land was purchased for Edwards Chapel, later known as Edwards Grove. Additional land was purchased by Jerusalem in 1922, 1944, 1975, and 2001. Trustees serving during the early church were Bros. Peter Williams, Sr., Lafayette Welch, Plummer Williams, Eddie Alston, and Peter Williams.
